Oncology Rehabilitation & Menopause Care

Specialized pelvic health support for cancer survivors and women navigating hormonal transitions.

Understanding Oncology & Menopause Pelvic Health

Cancer treatment and menopause both change the pelvic floor — often in ways that catch women by surprise. Surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy can leave scar tissue, restricted mobility, pelvic pain, urinary changes, and sexual dysfunction long after treatment ends. Menopause brings its own set of changes: declining estrogen thins and weakens pelvic floor tissues, leading to urinary urgency, incontinence, vaginal dryness, and painful intercourse. Together, these changes fall under what's called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), and they are highly treatable.

Many women are told that leaking, pain, or discomfort after cancer treatment or during menopause is "just part of it." It isn't. Pelvic floor therapy for menopause and cancer rehabilitation is a proven, non-surgical approach that helps you recover function, reduce pain, and reclaim intimacy — whether you are in active treatment, recently finished, or years into survivorship.

We see patients from Upper Montclair and across North Jersey who are navigating breast, gynecologic, prostate-related (for partners), or colorectal cancer recovery, as well as women in perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause. Every plan is coordinated with your oncology or gynecology team.

    Signs & Symptoms

If you experience any of these after cancer treatment or during menopause, pelvic floor therapy can help:

    • • Urinary leaking that started during or after cancer treatment
    • • Painful intercourse from vaginal dryness or tissue thinning (GSM)
    • • Pelvic pain or tension after surgery or radiation
    • • Scar tightness or restricted mobility from surgical incisions
    • • Urinary urgency, frequency, or overactive bladder with menopause
    • • Vaginal dryness, burning, or irritation during perimenopause or menopause
    • • Reduced mobility or stiffness after lymph node removal
    • • Pelvic floor weakness or a feeling of heaviness with hormonal changes

How I Treat Oncology & Menopause Pelvic Dysfunction

Your evaluation starts with understanding where you are in your treatment or hormonal journey — what surgeries you've had, what radiation or chemotherapy you've received, what medications you're on, and what symptoms are most affecting your quality of life. I assess your pelvic floor muscle function, scar mobility, and tissue health, always coordinating with your oncology or gynecology team.

Treatment is gentle and stage-appropriate: scar mobilization for surgical and radiation-related tissue changes, soft tissue work for restricted mobility, pelvic floor strengthening or down-training depending on your needs, and dilator training and desensitization for painful intercourse. For menopause-related changes, I address the muscle and tissue components of GSM alongside your medical provider's hormonal recommendations. The goal is to help you feel like yourself again — strong, comfortable, and confident.

    Breast Cancer & Iatrogenic Menopause

Females treated for breast cancer may experience iatrogenic menopause and associated genitourinary syndrome which involves lower urinary tract, pelvic floor, and vulvovaginal tissue changes. These changes could increase the risk of urinary symptoms and dyspareunia in this population.

In post-menopausal women with GSM (Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause), these issues can be treated effectively with menopausal hormonal therapy including systemic therapy and/or topical vaginal estrogen application.

Unfortunately, patients on medications such as tamoxifen are unable to go on these therapies, although the body of evidence around topical application is undergoing a subtle shift.

Common Symptoms of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in Cancer Survivors:

Decrease or loss of sexual desire
Inability to achieve or maintain arousal
Vaginal stenosis (decreased vaginal length and elasticity)
Difficulty or inability to achieve orgasm
    Pain during intercourse
Pain or numbness of vulvovaginal and perineal tissue
    Altered body image

We also work with you for urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, core and pelvic floor weakness, and bone density loss associated with oncology conditions and care.

    Peri-menopause & Menopause Care

Menopause is a natural transition, but the changes to your body can be challenging. Declining estrogen affects your pelvic floor, bladder control, vaginal health, and bone density. Physical therapy can help you manage these changes and maintain your quality of life.

Our holistic approach addresses the Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM) that includes pelvic floor changes that occur during this life stage, helping you feel strong, confident, and comfortable in your body. We also work with patients to improve bone density through targeted exercise sessions.
